Post by email… do this even work?

I like movies. I love movies. I spend inordinate amounts of time watching movies. This said, there are a lot of “classics” I haven’t seen, etc. but there are a lot of movies I like. My logic with movies (as with most things) is that you cannot hate something until you watch it (that is, unless it involves Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber. You don’t need to watch those) so, I watch them. There are a few movies I love. Here they are.

Whip It!
This is not a cinematic masterpiece. The script is not particularly wonderfully written. The soundtrack is fantastic, but not the best. The acting is, also, nothing special. However: this is quite possibly my favorite movie. I love Ellen Page. I can’t help loving Ellen Page. I know she’s no acting genius but she’s adorable and I love her type-cast, quirky-indie-big-time-hipster character. She definitely fills that role in this movie. She joins a roller derby team (this movie started my… minor obsession/monthly trips to the Vermont roller derby), she has a (sufficiently attractive) boyfriend who also happens to be in a cool band. It’s… I love this movie.

Lord of the Rings
The Fellowship is actually playing right now. I’m not feeling well and The Fellowship is a fantastic sick day movie, but all three are really quite fantastic. This is one of the very few movie series that I would say surpasses the book in quality. I didn’t enjoy the books very much. I don’t know why. I mean, I guess I should have. They’re kind of like… that thing that I like. With cool characters and something very old and adventure but… the movies. You need the visual in these, I think. Not to mention the fact that it has a killer score. Some of the best music in any movie that I’ve ever seen. Also, the elves are my favorite.

Fight Club
While I did really, really enjoy the book, I also think that this movie is better than the book. Again: you need the visual. You can read about Tyler Durden beating the fucking shit out of himself but it’s not until you watch it that you really understand. This is one of my favorite movies. I love this… mind-bending stuff. I love stories that mess with your mind and make you question everything. Fight Club does that and does it extremely well. Also, it involves Helena Bonham-Carter. Nothing is ever bad when it involves Helena Bonham-Carter.

Across The Universe
Musical. This is one of maybe… one or two others that will make this list. I don’t really do show tunes. I mean, I enjoy Guys and Dolls ad I think that there are a couple of others that are kind of fun, but other than that it’s just not my thing. This is different, though, in that there’s nothing show tunes-y about it. It’s the Beatles’ music. It’s the Beatles’ music and it’s done well. Plus I love the story. And it’s my favorite time period of… ever. Jim Sturgess is attractive. Evan Rachel Wood is attractive. It wins all over the place. I have seen this movie about 28 times.

Donnie Darko
The first time I watched this movie, honestly, I was not too impressed. I didn’t really enjoy it that much. It was confusing and kind of disturbing and I was just not that into it. But, well, I read the Wikipedia article and watched it a few more times (I’ve seen it about 6 times) and got a better understanding of the plot. Also, because of that, I was able to focus on other things. Like how kick-ass Jake Gyllenhaal is and how fantastic the soundtrack is and how much I like the story line.

This is, in no way, a complete list. Maybe I’ll do more later.

  1. I FUCKING LOVE FIGHT CLUB.

Luna and I watched it the other morning at about three, with our asses wedged into an uncomfortable couch and a can of whipped cream each. Perfect Fight Club conditions.

  2. :D It’s fantastic.

  3. Read Invisible by hautem- or something- that guy who wrote Godless. It’s all mind fucky and total awesomeness in novel form.
